Hello Super Heroes! Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page! We are taking the steps to help achieve JDRF's mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
The money our JDRF Walk Team raises will go directly to support this life-changing research.
The JDRF Walk is a fantastic way to make a difference in the millions of lives of people affected by T1D. For at least that one day, Scotty will look around and see all the support he has from his friends, family and community. On Walk Day, everyone can have fun and celebrate how much closer to a cure we are because of their efforts.
Each member of our team is already hard at work in their fundraising. If you have taken time to visit our team page today, we ask that you consider making a donation or joining our team. You generosity has the potential to change so many lives.
We can't wait to see you on October 19th at Neptune's Park, 31st Street at the Oceanfront. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. and we'll step-off at 9:30 a.m!
Below, please find Scotty's 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes letter:
Dear Members of Scotty's Super Heroes Fighting For A Cure,
I am happy to announce that I have been selected from a group of twenty five eleven –eighteen year-olds as a 2013-2014 Ambassador for JDRF Hampton Roads. My duties in this role includes the following: organizing a Kid’s Walk at Great Neck Middle School, volunteering in the JDRF Hampton Roads office, volunteering at, preparing for and working at the JDRF annual Hope Gala and Walk to Cure Diabetes, speaking at local events, advocating for (T1D) type 1 diabetes, and educating the community about (T1D) type 1 diabetes.
This is the perfect time for me to tell you that this year’s Walk to Cure Diabetes will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 in Virginia Beach at Neptune’s Park, 31st Street Oceanfront. Check in time is 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. Please join our Walk Team, Scotty’s Super Heroes Fighting For A Cure by visiting walk.jdrf.org to register or call the JDRF office at 757-497-2202. My mom, Kristen Carter, is our Team Captain. If you decide to make a tax deductible donation on line, please be sure to designate it to our team. It’s great to know that more than 80% of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research related education, and that JDRF is one of the nation’s five All-Star charities for efficiency and effectiveness!
Here are some exciting local facts that were recently featured in the September edition of Hampton Roads Magazine: In 2012, JDRF provided more than $110 million for T1D research and currently sponsors $530 million in scientific research in seventeen countries. A portion of this research is happening here in Virginia at EVMS and UVA where scientists are currently running clinical trials for the Artificial Pancreas Project. An artificial pancreas system—which uses computer algorithms (that calculates everything from insulin doses to blood-glucose levels) to link insulin delivery to continuous glucose monitoring –can respond to glucose fluctuations in real time. The technology has the potential to dramatically improve the lives and health of millions of people with T1D by reducing life-threatening extremes in high blood-glucose levels. This is awesome news!
You’ve probably noticed by now that I keep referring to type 1 diabetes as T1D. This is now the proper way to refer to the disease, and even JDRF’s logo has been updated to incorporate this acronym (look closely and you’ll see the “T,” the “number 1” and the “D.” This is pretty cool. JDRF has also changed the tag-line—it’s simple, to the point, and speaks to our two main goals!
(My original letter had the new JDRF logo here. Unfortunately, this web page would not allow me to paste it here).
Please join my family team on October 19th for the Walk to Cure Diabetes.
