January 1, 2014 marks year 5 for living, surviving and thriving with Type 1 Diabetes for me. My family and I have worked really hard these last 5 years and I am proud of what we have fought through and overcome. Type 1 Diabetes doesn't get easier even after 5 years. I still face the same struggles and burdens everyday....highs and lows and all the annoying scarey side effects, but I'm doing it and trying to keep a smile on my face.
I am 12 years old and in 6th grade this year. I love school and have great teachers and even greater friends. I am on student council and will be going to College For Kids day in Stevens Point. I played baseball, basketball and football this year. Football is my favorite but I keep working hard and improving in all sports. I hopefully will get to go to Diabetes Camp in Rosholt for a week this summer.
This year I have participated in as many things for Type 1 Diabetes as I can. I met with Representative Reid Ribble to talk about Federal Funding for diabetes research. I did a speech for the Lions Pride which supports the Lions Camp in Rosholt and met the Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch. I also helped MC a golf outing in Milwaukee hosted by John and Tracey Hummel to raise money for Type 1 Diabetes. It is really important to me that I do all I can to help find my cure! The insulin I take all day, everyday is not my cure, it's my life support! I won't stop working until the cure is found.
In October my family and I went to Tampa Bay to visit our friends Tom and Chelsea Crabtree. Chelsea has Type 1 Diabetes too. We had a great time with them and got to see #84 Tom Crabtree play live for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I love the friends I have met through this horrible disease and want to find the cure for them as much as for me.
The walk is on May 10th in Green Bay and if you can join me, I would be very proud to have you on my team!
**You can donate on-line by going to the JDRF website, click on walk to cure diabetes and click on one of our names or you can mail us a check written out to JDRF.**
Thank you all for the love, friendship and support you have given me this past year. Your friendship means so much to me and my family. With the family and friends I have, we WILL find the cure!!
