I'm participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes!
January 1, 2012, was my nephew Spencer?s third year being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. There isn?t a moment that goes by that he is not reminded of it, but he is trying to take it in stride.
Spencer is 10 years old and in the fourth grade. He plays as hard as any little guy and always tries his best! Diabetes sometimes slows him down a little, but he rarely complains.
He did some really amazing stuff this year. He won a Youth Alliance Award for his work raising money for JDRF. Bill Jartz presented him with the award. He learned to water ski. And even met the real Bucky Badger!
Spencer?s baseball team this summer took 1st place in league and 2nd in tournament. He was so excited. He got his very first real sports trophy ever...two of them!! He was one of the few boys on the team who didn?t cry when they lost the Championship game. He felt really bad, but was glad he got a trophy and got to play on the same team as some really great guys and coaches!! Look for the positives....that is his motto. That and always have a good time!
This October has brought big changes for diabetes in Spencer?s life. He got on a diabetes insulin pump. It has been a lot of learning, but he loves it! It is NOT a cure to diabetes. He still has to poke his finger at least 7 times a day and still gets shots, just not as many. And although the pump makes life easier most of the time, diabetes still is in charge and Woody, Tomi and Spencer are doing their best to manage it.
Since Spencer?s diagnosis in 2009, his team ?Steppin? 4 Spence? has raised over $22,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation! Until there is a cure, we will continue to raise money to help find one. This year his team is going to wear shirts that Ryan and Spencer designed in honor of their favorite baseball guys, The Brewers. They had a great season and came close to the World Series. When we find Spencer?s cure, we can all feel like World Series Champions!!
Thank you for supporting Spencer this year with your love and friendship. Thank you for any donation you make to JDRF. Together we WILL be Champions and find the cure.
The walk is on May 5th in Green bay and if you can join us, Spencer would be very proud to have you on his team!
