Welcome to my JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes personal fundraising page!

On August 16th of last year Fisher was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. After losing 12 pounds from May to August and having other symptoms that were not typical of Fisher, we decided it was time to take him to the doctor. Within 15 minutes in the doctor's office, we knew he had T1D. Prior to his diagnosis, we had no idea what a person with T1D goes through on a daily basis. Our days are filled with reading food labels, counting carbs, figuring out insulin doses, treating lows and, for Fisher, poking his finger multiple times a day and giving himself injections four times a day. He has done the finger pokes and shots on his own from day 1 other than the when it's time for shots in his right arm. Initially it was very overwhelming and we still have times when it is very overwhelming but it's getting easier.

Speaking for myself - most of the time, we just keep moving and the tasks associated with T1D are just things we have to do. It is times like right now when I am sitting down thinking about it that I get emotional. It is the thought of knowing that Fisher will have to live with T1D the rest of his life until a cure is found. As a 12 year old, he doesn't understand what "the rest of your life" means as much as I do as an adult. Thank God T1D is something people do LIVE with but why do people have to live with it? JDRF's mission is to make Type One into Type None.

Fisher and I attended a JDRF presentation in Appleton on current research. The research is promising regarding better capabilities to manage T1D however this takes money and time. Less money is given for research for T1D than other diseases such as obesity and Type 2 Diabetes because less people are impacted.

JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every donation, big or small, from donors like you, allows JDRF to fund the critical research needed to find a cure.
