Hi, My name is Preston . From an outsider, I probably appear to be your average 7 year old.
In March of 2011, I was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes; also known as Juvenile Diabetes. In case you are unfamiliar with T1, it means that my body thinks that the cells in my pancreas that create insulin are bad, and has attacked them, preventing them from making insulin in the future. Our bodies need insulin to convert sugar into energy so that we can do all the fun things that this world has to offer.
Because my body cannot make insulin anymore, I have to check my blood sugar level multiple times each day with a finger prick test, (which we call “a hokey pokey”) and I must do this before every meal and/or snack. Then I have to figure out how many carbohydrates are contained within the meal/snack I’m about to have, and then I need to determine how much insulin my body needs to receive so that i may eat. My mom and dad help with giving my shots right now. I have to alternate the shot sites so deposits don't build up inside my body, new sites can hurt really bad. This is something I will have to do for the rest of my life, as my life depends on it.
However, it is my dream that within my lifetime there will be a cure for this disease. That’s why I support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The JDRF is the leading charitable foundation and advocate for T1 diabetes research in the world. Many of the treatment options available today, including the insulin pump that I will wear someday, were at one time research projects funded directly by the JDRF.
You can help fulfill my dream too. You can join my team, Team Preston, and walk with us on Spetember 14, 2013 as we take to the grounds to see the animals at the Milwaukee County Zoo and show how many people are affected and/or know somebody who is affected by this horrible disease.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my story. And I thank you in advance for your contribution, whether it be a donation of money or your time. With your support, I believe that one day my dream to be free from diabetes will come true.
Please contact my daddy and or mommy if you would like to join my team, Team Preston, for the Walk To Cure Diabetes, on Saturday September 14, 2013.
