This year's JDRF walk is quickly approaching! Team Luke will be walking at the Milwaukee County Zoo on Saturday, September 14th. Our son Luke is 8 years old and has been living with type 1 diabetes since the age of 3. Last year Luke did a wonderful job as the Youth ambassador for the walk! Over the past year Luke has been learning how to change his insulin pump and how to read nutrition labels. He had a close relationship with his second grade teacher and they made a great team working together to keep his blood sugar under control at school. Luke is a very responsible and mature 8-year-old!
Although we have been able to help Luke manage the disease, type 1 diabetes has devastating long-term effects. If a cure is not found Luke will have the risk of losing limbs and his eye sight. Diabetes also affects major organs like the heart and kidneys.
Luke checks his blood sugar at least 6 times a day and doses himself with insulin at least 5 times a day via his insulin pump. This includes blood sugar checks in the middle of the night, every night! He has to weigh or measure his food before he eats, which is frustrating for him when he's really hungry. Luke rarely gets to go anywhere without one of his parents or grandparents with him, especially when he's practicing sports.
Please consider donating to Team Luke for the JDRF walk on Saturday, September 14th. This organization has been a tremendous source of hope and support for our family. With the money raised, 80 cents of every dollar goes directly to diabetes research and education. JDRF is the leading global organization dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and has donated over $1.5 billion to research. This funding has supported the Artificial Pancreas Project and the Beta Cell Therapies, among others.
You may donate to any walker on Team Luke at www.jdrf.org. If you wish to help us raise donations and then walk with us in September, we happily welcome all walkers to our team! On the website, click on "Walk to Cure Diabetes", and you will be led to a page that will allow you to donate or register as a walker. Look for "Team Luke" of the Milwaukee walk, and Deanna Barczak as the team captain. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact Jason at 414-617-7369 or email@example.com.
