Hello all! Yifan here. This is the second year I join JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. I have been living with type 1 diabetes for 9 years since I was 11. Two years ago, I moved from China and started college at UW-Madison and had to take care of everything myself. At first, I did not even know how to give myself shots since I always had an insulin pump. Staying away from sweets and testing my blood sugar level regularly were also difficult to me. I ended up with getting hospitalized in my freshman year from DKA, an acute complication of type 1 diabetes.
I started to take more efforts in taking care of my diabetes after that incidence. Friends and family are great support to me during the time. Living with diabetes is never an easy thing, especially for young children, but it also helps me learn how to take responsibility of myself and also be caring to others. My sister has had diabetes for 22 years. She is a mom and has a two-year old daughter now. We both hope that no other kid would have to suffer from the disease in the next generation.
JDRF is working to improve lives of people with type 1 diabetes and cure diabetes and the complications ultimately. I am hoping the little help I am offering can help people out there who are like me and my sister, and diabetes can be cured one day. I would really appreciate any sort of support from you.
