Team Nick Nack...our 2nd year!!!

Type 1 diabetes changed Nicks life forever at the age of 3.  He has been living with this disease over 3 years and is the bravest child we know. Over 3 million people in the United States struggle every day to manage this disease...and approximately 80 more are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes everyday.

What does type 1 diabetes look like???  Checking blood sugar before every meal, before exercise, before taking the school bus, before bed, and throughout the night. The number of fingerpricks for Nick on a good day is 7.

Having type 1 diabetes means having to get insulin shots or wear an insulin pump. People with shots need to inject themselves at least 4 times a day. Since November 2012 Nick has been on an insulin pump. His site gets changed every 3 days.

Having type 1 diabetes means having to stop doing whatever it is to manage the disease. Thoughts that constantly plague our mind:  is the insulin reservoir almost empty, is the tube kinked, does the pump need a new battery, did the site pull out while he was playing, is he feeling low and need a snack, or we wonder if the restaurant we choose has the nutritional information so we can properly cover the food.

This is every second, every minute, every hour, every day, every year....for the rest of Nicks life.

When Nick is asked if he could wish for anything in the world-he says he wishes to get rid of his diabetes..and we wonder if one day there will be a world without diabetes. We have hope and keep the faith that JDRF is working towards finding a cure.

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of type 1 diabetes.

You can help us in many ways.  We realize that there are many different situations in our lives where a donation to JDRF isn't a priority right now and that there may be other organizations you support but this is the one dearest to our we always feel compelled to ask.
