Imagine in 15 years from now telling pediatric patients in their doctor offices, "I see you were screened at increased risk for type 1 diabetes and you have successfully completed 2 of your 3 immunizations from this disease..." In this last year alone I have been privileged to share several exciting advancements in diabetes research, one of which may even lead to a new understanding of the pathogenesis of Type 1 Diabetes! Imagine all the other areas of research underway - Artificial Pancreas, beta cell encapsulation, and immunotherapies coming together to realize this for our patients.
I serve on the South Sound Branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the nation's leading fundraiser for research and pathways for therapies to treat, prevent and cure diabetes. It has been my privilege to work with this Board for local Pierce County outreach events for patients and families with Type 1 Diabetes while always striving to raise money to progress toward the ultimate goal of finding therapies to realize the spectacular goals of JDRF - Treating, Preventing and Curing T1D.
Last year I walked with close friends and family in the East Pierce Family Medicine Walk Team and with generous donations we raised $460 to advance these goals! It is my goal to have a larger walk team and push past last year's amount to show our support on May 10, 2014 at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma for the JDRF Walk To Cure Diabetes!
If you are unable to walk on May 10, I am also collecting pledges for our goal of $1200. Even a pledge of $10-$20 makes a tremendous difference when we combine our efforts.
Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by walking with us? All we need you to do is click on the "Join this Team" button, make a donation, and begin fundraising. It’s simple, fast, and fun!
Thank you for your support, and we’ll look forward to see you on Walk day!
