The Diabetes Destroyers

We will turn Type One into Type None

Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page!

Dear Friends and Family,

This is on behalf of my son, Aidan.  In November 2009, Aidan at age 6, was diagnosed with Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes.  This means his body is unable to produce the insulin it needs to function properly, and he will be insulin dependent for the rest of his life.  Each day, he must do about 7 finger pricks for blood glucose testing, and while he used to need at least 4 shots of insulin daily, he has "graduated" to having a pump.  However, insulin is NOT a cure for Type 1 diabetes, it is merely Aidan?s life support.

The cruel thing about this disease is that even with strict control of Aidan?s blood glucose levels, his life expectancy will be shortened by about 7 to 10 years.  He is more likely to have heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, and other diabetes related complications.

Aidan has been amazing since his diagnosis.  For a 6 year old child to learn that his life has been altered, he has been incredibly strong and brave.  His courage has helped me through this process, and he has been so optimistic.  But sometimes he has his moments where he holds his head down, and says, "I hope the scientists come up with a way to take my diabetes away soon."  This breaks my heart knowing that I, as his mom, can not take away this disease.  But researchers are closer than ever before to coming up with a cure for diabetes.  But research can not be done without funding.

This year's Walk takes place in State College, on May 03, 2014 and I'm writing to ask for your support. Now more than ever, EACH of us can make a real difference in the lives of people with type 1 diabetes.  New to the walk this year is a 5K run that can be done prior to the walk.

There are 2 ways you can help us make a difference for Aidan and everyone living with diabetes:

  1. You can join our team, The Diabetes Destroyers, which consists of family and friends who collect pledges and walk with us.
  2. You can make a contribution of any amount with cash, or a check made payable to JDRF (or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), or via internet.

Thanks for your support!!
