Team Mickey’s Allstarz is excited to participate in the Walk to Cure Diabetes for the 8th year! Last year we passed the $50,000.00 mark in donations and I continue to be amazed with everyone’s generosity. I have had diabetes for 12 years now, but am so lucky to have family and friends that support me throughout my life. Thank you!
Alot has changed in the last year. I finally graduated from high school (I know this is a surprise to everybody!) and am currently a freshman at Coe College! At Coe I am on the basketball team which has been an awesome experience. The Kohawk’s finished second this year in the IIAC Conference. Believe it or not - I joined a sorority. I am a Tri-Delt following in my mom’s footsteps. Lots of great friends and experiences! Overall I couldn’t be happier with my decision to attend Coe and have loved every minute of it.
So you might wonder when you donate money to JDRF what is the money used for? Primarily it funds research. Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a disease you never outgrow; it can be misleading with the name juvenile diabetes and all the news regarding Type 2 diabetes. Until a cure is found, JDRF is committed to keeping individuals with T1D healthy and reduce the burdens of living with the disease. JDRF continues to work improving glucose control with drugs and devices such as the Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) and the development of an artificial pancreas. Until a cure is found I continue to monitor my carbs, use an insulin pump to deliver insulin throughout the day, test my blood sugar 10-12 times a day, and tune out all the media that paints a nasty picture of the complications I might experience later in life.
College in itself can be stressful, but throw in T1D and - yeah, not fun! I have learned alot this year and am proud of how I’m living my life in spite of this disease - but pray for the day other 6 year olds no longer need to receive a diagnosis like I did! So how can you help?
