Join me in the fight to create a world without type 1 diabetes!
JDRF 5K WALK – Sunday October 26, 2014 Registration 8AM Walk 10AM
We are so excited this year! Philadelphia was chosen as one on the pilot sites for the One Walk until Type None – YES – We are getting so close so we need your help more than ever!!
It is hard to believe that Colleen was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 9 ½ years ago. We have lived through numerous daily shots not to mention testing her blood glucose at least 7 times a day. Now we have a pump but she still needs to test 7 times a day and change her insertion site at least every 2 days.(of course, Colleen with her activities changes a lot more than usual. We are on our 4th pump in 6 years – they should last 4 years). We are blessed that Colleen is recognizing her lows at night which has allowed us to sleep a little more than usual. I was amaze to learn that most T1D parents rarely get to sleep through the night. We have seen how having an autoimmune disease made Colleen more vulnerable to illnesses than other children her age. Just this last year, Colleen had pertussis(yes – she received her shots), strep throat, a sinus infection, mono, and mono that they think attacked her brain and ended up with a 4 day stay at CHOP to try to resolve the debilitating headaches. Unfortunately, she also missed numerous days from school.
OK – I am so excited to say that I(Debbie) was so happy to be chosen to go to Washington, DC to the JDRF National Conference and I HELD the ENCAPSULATED PANCREAS!!!! I am so proud to have the volunteer title, “Family Team Champion” for such an amazing organization. What does this mean – well I am responsible for all the Family Walk Teams. WOW – So exciting and challenging. We need to raise 1.9 MILLION dollars this year for the Philadelphia walk alone!!! I know we can as we need to for the following reasons!!!
JDRF has 6 majors areas that they are focusing on to find a cure for T1D. This is what your donations have gone to. Thank you
1)Artificial Pancreas – JDRF funded $24 MILLION to support the first successful read world test of a closed-loop artificial pancreas system.
2)Complications – JDRF funded $9 MILLION which led to the discovery of Lucentis – the first new therapy with the ability to reverse diabetes related vision loss
3)Encapsulation – JDRF funded $15 MILLION for clinical trials for encapsulated cell therapies which will restore insulin dependence for 18 months by implanting newly created insulin-producing beta cells into a protective capsule.
4)Smart Insulin – JDRF funded $5 MILLION for early development of smart insulin. A single daily dose of insulin circulates in the bloodstream – turning on and off as needed. This will allow a T1D perfect blood-glucose control throughout the day.
5)Restoration – JDRF funded $27 MILLION for a potential biological cure for T1D
6)Prevention – JDRF funded $11 MILLION to support work on a vaccine to slow or stop the progression of T1D before insulin dependence occurs.
