Join Campbell's Troop on October 26th!

Campbell is more excited than ever for this year's walk. Her enthusiasm is our true motivation because as you can imagine, life with this disease is an emotional rollercoaster for all of us.There are times when she hates it or is sad, times when she wants to hide it (from her peers and others) and times she wants to hide from it and pretend she isn't different. Right now, she wants to fight it. She wants to do this by furthering life-changing research; specifically beta-cell encapsulation, which could mean going off insulin for up to 18-24 months; or even smart insulin, which would "turn on" only when needed and mean possibly only one shot a day instead of the 5-7 a day that she currently gives herself. So we are fighting with her and ask you to join us.

Tangible progress is being made. This past May, after many months of struggling with insurance and medical suppliers, we were able to obtain a continuous glucose monitor for Campbell. This device, which was not even readily available when she was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago, has been life changing for us. She wears a sensor in her bottom that attaches to a transmitter that wirelessly sends blood sugar readings to a hand-held receiver (looks like an ipod) every five minutes and alarms us when her sugars fall below or go higher than predetermined safe limits. This is a huge step and tool in better diabetes management and aids us in minimizing the constant threat of life-threatening lows and highs.

Other critical milestones have been achieved this past year in three important JDRF funded research areas; the artificial pancreas, beta-cell encapsulation, and smart insulin. Over 90% of the money raised from this Walk will go directly to furthering this important research.

So, Campbell’s Troop will continue to fight for a CURE and better treatment options for Campbell and all of those living with T1D. JDRF is our best and largest advocate for furthering research and accelerating progress on the most promising, life-changing opportunities.

We greatly appreciate your support of our family and this very important cause. We look forward to having many of you join us again or for the first time in the 2014 JDRF One Walk on October 26th at the Philadelphia Art Museum! Registration for the Walk is FREE! Even if you can't join us at the Walk, we appreciate all donations (tax-deductible) of any amount made to help us find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

THANK YOU for your support! We are truly making a difference. This is our best hope to give Campbell a long and healthy life, free from the many serious complications caused by T1D. We hope see you at the Walk on October 26th!
