We will turn Type One into Type None

Our daughter, Campbell, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) on May 15, 2012 at just 7 years old. We cannot believe it has already been a whole year since we prepared to participate in our first Walk to Cure Diabetes. While we have grown a tremendous amount in the last year in our understanding of this chronic, permanent, and life-threatening disease, we still struggle on a daily basis to keep Campbell’s blood sugars at healthy levels. This will be an ongoing challenge for us for the rest of our lives unless scientists can find a cure. There are so many factors that contribute to dangerously high or low blood sugars on a daily basis; such as, food, exercise, adrenaline, excitement, stress, illness, growth, hormones, and even a change in the number of daylight hours in a day.

Campbell continues to amaze us every day with her strength, bravery and responsibility. She checks her blood sugar by pricking her own fingers 8-10 times a day, counts every gram of carbohydrates she puts in her mouth, makes healthy food choices, and gives herself 5-7 insulin shots a day. She is only 8 years old.

Our walk team, Campbell’s Troop, is continuing to fight for a CURE and better treatment options for Campbell and all of those living with Type 1 Diabetes. Our greatest hope lies with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the research it funds and supports.

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on T1D research and the largest nongovernmental funder of diabetes research. Our fundraising efforts will help JDRF achieve its goal of improving the lives of all people affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. By joining our walk team and/or making a donation, you will be helping us to raise funds to directly support research with the greatest potential to conquer this disease. Over 90% of the money raised from this Walk will go directly to research.

We greatly appreciate your support of our family and this very important cause. We look forward to having many of you join us in the 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes on October 27th at the Philadelphia Art Museum! Please register each walker individually (registration is free). Even if you can't join us at the Walk, we appreciate all donations (tax-deductible) of any amount made to help us find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

THANK YOU for your support! This is our best hope to give Campbell a long and healthy life, free from the many serious complications caused by T1D. We hope see you at the Walk on October 27th!

NOTE: Many companies will match charitable donations made by it's employees. Please check to see if your company or your spouse's company will match all or part of your donation. THANK YOU!!!

In the November 19, 2012 issue of Forbes Magazine, JDRF was named one of Forbes' "5 All-Star Charities," for fundraising efficiency!!!
