Join me in the fight to create a world without type 1 diabetes!

Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!

My friends, family & myself be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.

Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.

Our 4-year-old son, Jaciel was shockingly diagnosed with T1D in December of 2012. An emergency visit to the Pediatrician had us ambulanced en route to Children’s Medical Hospital of Dallas. Upon arriving, we found that his glucose (blood sugar) level registered at 600 (normal count is below 180). We were sent to ICU and stayed there for 2 ½ days before transferring to a specialty unit. There, the wonderful nurses & doctors worked around the clock to improve the health of our son. Given my background as a nurse, I thought I knew just about everything about diabetes. It wasn’t until that dreadful day when I realized I was in for a personal lesson and hands on experience.

The past 20 months have been an emotional roller coaster for us. We try our best to explain to our son what this disease is, why he has to get his finger poked and get injected several times a day. The worst part, for us, is explaining to our son why he can’t eat certain foods he sees other children eating. It’s a difficult road we are on on but I do realize it is also manageable with the support and modern technology/medicine we have in the world today. We are exploring many different options to make this easier on him. He now uses an insulin pen for meal injections and one syringe in the mornings. In the near future, the medical field is looking into insulin pump options, which will be significantly easier on those with this terrible disease. Our hope for the future is there will be a cure and while it may seem impossible, nothing is.  This disease, like many, requires patience, knowledge and the support and love from all to get through our days.

JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.

Please support me and donate to my Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible today?

Thank you for your support!
