It never ends. Nights, weekends, vacations, and holidays are the worst. All of the times that we just want to leave our worries behind, and celebrate a change of pace, are the moments when diabetes screams the loudest. Any new schedule, new food, or new activity is an opportunity for disaster. Simple pleasures like a meal with friends, a sleep-over, a run to the park, or the dreaded weekend away, are cause for concern. Driving, dating, final exams, all are affected. Type I Diabetes never leaves. It hangs over every life event, colors every moment, and interrupts without warning. Did you get your glucometer? What is your blood sugar? How much insulin did you take? Do you feel bad?
Parenting and childhood are difficult enough without daily shots. Meals are already hectic without counting carbs and testing blood sugars. Self esteem can be elusive for children even without a chronic disease.
The uncertainty added by diabetes is unrelenting. We do everything within our power, but we know it's not enough. We need a cure. We need your help.
