A Day in Owen’s Shoe’s

My mom wakes me up and checks my blood sugar, and asks me what I want for breakfast. Then she puts both my blood sugar and how many carbohydrates I’m eating into my pump. It tells her how much insulin to give me and she enters it in my pump.  Then I set my timer and she also sets one. I need to eat 15 minutes after I receive my insulin, or it might cause me to go low. I get ready, my mom fixes my breakfast and my lunch. She has to put what my blood sugar was and how much insulin I received for breakfast on my Blood Sugar Sheet that I take to school. Then she writes down what I’m having for lunch and how many carbs each item is and how many total carbohydrates I‘m having for lunch. I eat my breakfast and pack my back pack for school. The rest of the day I do all the diabetes stuff my self. I’m off to school!

I have to check my blood sugar and write down on my blood sugar sheet, what my BG is and put it in my pump before every recess, PE, lunch, and before I go home on the bus. That is a minimum of four finger pricks at school. If I’m low which is below 80 I usually have a juice box and set my 15 minute timer and check to make sure my blood sugar has come back up. If that happens during P.E. or recess I have to sit out until my blood sugar comes back up.

Why we raise money for research

It's so all of us with T1D could just get up in the morning eat our breakfast and just have a normal day at school without all the blood sugar checks. That would be AWESOME. I’d like to just be like everybody else. Don’t get me wrong my diabetes isn’t stopping me from doing anything I want to do, but it does slow me down sometimes.
