I walk because..

My horror story began when I was 9 years old. I was usually a very active child until my mom noticed I was getting worn out faster and faster until the point where I just spent all of my time sleeping. I began missing so much school due to being exhausted and sick that my parents almost got in trouble. I started falling asleep in my classes and then falling asleep during meals as well.

My mom took me to the doctor several times and even to different doctors but they all said the same thing, "She's fine, she just needs to catch up on her sleep." Then on October 3rd, 2003 it all changed. My school nurse noticed that I was acting much, MUCH worse than I even had before this. She called my mom and had her take me to the emergency room.

On that day I was a little over 5 foot tall and about 60 pounds, so you can imagine how skinny I was. As soon as I was in the emergency room they figured out what was truly wrong with me. I had type 1 diabetes and was in fact 3 hours away from dying with a blood sugar over 1,000.
These were the scaries days of my life. I spent a little over a week in the hospital training and learning to cope with the disease but still to this day have my bad days with it.

After getting out of the hospital, I was scared of what people would think and even that I was going to leave my parents and die at school or by myself. I had a hard time dealing with it and if it weren't for the love and support of my family and closest friends, I wouldn't be where I am today. I now know that I can do whatever I put my heart and mind to. There is nothing holding me back, not even my diabetes. It is a part of who I am and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Welcome to my JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes personal fundraising page!

I'm joining this year's Walk to raise funds to improve the lives of millions of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help JDRF advance its strategic research plan to end T1D.

T1D is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, which the body needs to get energy from food. Managing the disease requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.

JDRF is working every day to change that. And, as the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research, every dollar JDRF directs toward its research plan comes from donors like you.

Please support my commitment and donate to my Walk fundraising efforts today. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease.

Thank you for your support!
