Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
November 2012 Matthew's life changed forever. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It has been an incredibly hard adjustment but we are dealing with this new way of managing life as positively as we can. After 24 hours in the ICU with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and in total 3 days in hospital we went home to a new routine. His new normal started off with multiple daily injections just so he could eat. Every carbohydrate he eats must be counted & insulin given. He has to check his blood glucose levels several times a day too. 17 months on we manage his diabetes in a different way. He is on an insulin pump and wears a CGM (continuous glucose monitor). We still have to calculate the carbohydrates, but have now learned how to take other things such as dietary fat, exercise, illness etc into consideration. It's not easy !
Matthew has been absolutely amazing. He has will power some people dream of. He did his first season of Cross Country running. Took part in track & field training at school, and in particular loved the hurdles. He tries everything, all the while whilst having to maintain a very tricky balance with his blood sugar levels.
He is on his 2nd year also of playing the trumpet and is in the schools Concert Band. He is hoping to make Symphonic Band for the next school year. ***Update - he made Symphonic Band !***
We hope that you feel able to help Matthew & all others that have this relentless disease by supporting us & JDRF. Committed to finding a cure.

Here's some more information:
We're taking steps to help JDRF progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) from people's lives until no one has to fear developing this disease. By joining our Walk to Cure Diabetes team and making a donation to JDRF, you'll raise money to help fund critical T1D research and create a world without T1D.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
The challenge we've set ourselves - to raise money for JDRF and to walk - is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.
Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by walking with us? Just click on the "Join this Team" button, make a donation, and start fundraising.
Thank you for your support, and we'll see you on Walk day!
