Join me in the fight to create a world without type 1 diabetes!

My family and I will be walking in the JDRF Ron Santo Walk along the lakefront in October, our second year after my son’s diagnosis.  This Walk is a small way for us to show my son, Kyle, our support and dedication to him as he faces the incessant threat of T1 diabetes every hour and every day for the rest of his life.  Like every T1D victim, Kyle must endure an average of 35 injections weekly.  And, like all those afflicted with T1D, Kyle faces the heightened risks of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke.

Please see my request as an opportunity to make a real impact in someone’s life – for my son, in particular, and for all those, both young and old, who suffer with this dangerous and challenging disease.

Kyle just started his second year at Indiana University.  His new independence away has been a challenge.   Because those with T1 diabetes are not able to produce insulin in their bodies, they calculate throughout each and every day how much insulin to give themselves.   This life-sustaining insulin is delivered via shots and needles  --  24/7.    An inaccurate dosage can result in hospitalization and serious complications.  Any change of weather, stress, food, exercise, etc. can make calculating dosages very tricky – particularly for a college student.

Thank you for any donation you are able to make. Be assured that JDRF is the leading global organization focused on T1 diabetes research.

The road for people like Kyle living with Type 1 diabetes is a scary and uncertain one.  Every donation is a step towards the cure for this disease.

You can mail me a check made out to JDRF.  Or, you can make a safe and secure online donation by clicking on the link below.  If you'd like to walk with us and fund-raise on your own, please call me.  I can guide you through the registration process.

With an enormous amount of gratitude,

Barbara Shields
