On October 5, 2014 our family will participate in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes in support of Brendan who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) on February 10, 2014. Please join us and support Brendan's Brigade!
T1D is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin, a hormone essential to turning food into energy. It strikes suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle. It requires constant carb counting, blood glucose testing, and insulin dependence through injections (until we get that pump!!) With T1D there are no days off and there is no cure.
Brendan has taken control of his care and has amazed us with his ability to focus on what has not changed. He still plays sports, attends parties, goes to school and argues with Mary Clare. The daily shots, finger pricks and nightly glucose tests and food monitoring are inconvenient but advances in technology and research have made our journey down this road a lot easier than we anticipated.
While managing day to day through these changes we are committed to JDRF. We hope to raise funds to improve the lives of every person with T1D, while accelerating progress toward curing, better treating and preventing the disease.
Please support Brendan's Brigade and donate to our fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease.
