We will turn Type One into Type None

Dear Family and Friends,

As many of you know, Leonardo was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on September 27th, 2013, when he was just two years old. After watching Leo for months, struggling with behavior and physical differences, Tommy and Meg decided to take him to the doctor. Within one hour on a Friday afternoon, Leo was rushed to the hospital and admitted with a sugar level of 620, nearly in a coma.

Our family will never forget the phone call and the words confirming, “Leo has diabetes”. It was a diagnosis that has impacted all of our lives tremendously.

Type 1 Diabetes has no cure. T1D is an all day, everyday, for the rest of your life disease that must be carefully managed. Leo wears a blood sugar sensor that is inserted into his skin, he takes multiple insulin injections everyday and has to have his food and activity carefully monitored to ensure that his blood sugar level does not get too high or low.

Watching Tommy and Meg learn how to live with this disease has been truly inspiring. Until this disease directly affected our family, we had no idea the intensity that it brings to the everyday life of a young and growing family.

After the incredibly emotional six day stay in the hospital, we have all gained a better understanding of the importance of doctors, nurses and staff when dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of T1D. By being involved in supporting the research for a cure, our entire family hopes that we can continue to give back to this ever growing community of little ones and their families.

With your support, the DeBetta and Gullickson families plan to walk together at the 2014 Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes, located in Chicago, Illinois.

We will walk for Leo.

Our three year old boy who loves going to parks and pretending he is a true American Ninja Warrior.

Leo, our little man who tells us his most favorite picture is one he keeps next to his bed, it’s of his Daddy and Mommy holding him.

Leo, who gives us all hugs and kisses and tells us he loves us.

We will walk to support Leo and his lifelong journey with diabetes.

Please join us in support of Type 1 Diabetes research in anyway that you can.

With sincere thanks,

Leo's family
