Join Team Rebecca to create a world without type 1 diabetes!
Welcome to Year 8 for Team Rebecca!
October 16, 2006 is a date that is forever etched in my memory - the day we learned that Rebecca had Type 1 Diabetes. Since then, our family has worked diligently each year to raise funds for JDRF to help turn Type 1 into Type None.
Team Rebecca is walking again in 2014 to raise funds to improve the lives of millions of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money we raise will help JDRF advance its strategic research plan to end T1D. We have seen first hand the improvements since Rebecca's diagnosis - and we know the improvements will continue until there is an end to this disease.
T1D is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, which the body needs to get energy from food. Managing the disease requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure. Rebecca receives over 2,000 finger pricks to test her blood-glucose and has daily insulin injections through her insulin pump that has to be changed and inserted into her body over 120 times each year. Now multiply that number times nearly 8 years of this - every day, with no day off EVER.
JDRF is working every day to change that. And, as the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research, every dollar JDRF directs toward its research plan comes from donors like you. Rebecca walked the steps of Capital Hill in 2013 to share her story with our leaders to continue federal funding for research that makes the same commitment JDRF makes.
Your support - both financially and emotionally - has meant so much to Rebecca and our family since 2006. Team Rebecca is always a leader in contributions to JDRF and that is because of each and every one of you and what you give to us. Rebecca is my inspiration for all that I do with Diabetes Outreach and Fundraising - and your support is my lifeline through all of it. Words cannot say enough for the emotional support you give us to keep on this path and not give up. We won't give up because each day a new family receives the news we received in October 2006 - and we look forward to the day when no other family has to hear those words.
