We will turn Type One into Type None

Welcome back family and friends to the Walk to Cure Diabetes! We are so excited to be participating for the second year in this wonderful event! The Walk to Cure Diabetes was such a blessing to our family last year. Ryland was 4 when he was diagnosed (Feb 2011) with diabetes. For many months after his diagnosis he kept telling us he did not know anybody with type 1 diabetes. In fact, he would say, "Grandpa has diabetes, but it is not the same kind." (Grandpa has type 2 diabetes...funny how quickly he learned the difference). I am going to share briefly with you a glimpse of why The Walk to Cure Diabetes is such a gift to families affected by type 1 diabetes.

The Rally ? family members and friends joined in the party dancing, celebrating, and dreaming of the day when the cure would be found.  Thanks to the generosity of so many, this dream is becoming a reality.  Just this year (2012) the first human trial was conducted utilizing an artificial pancreas.  This medical milestone (and work-in-progress) is the result of the passion, dedication, and generosity of so many people striving every day to find a cure for diabetes.  The research team that has worked on this trial anticipants in as few as 5 years the bionic pancreas could be available in the market.  Ryland would be in junior high?junior high!  It is our hope and dream that he would not have to suffer a lifetime of checking his sugar 8-10 times a day; he would not have to suffer from the intense fluctuations in his sugar levels leaving him exhausted and grumpy; he would no longer have to leave class early for lunch to stop by the nurses office to check is sugar and then leave lunch early to head back to the nurse to administer his insulin; he would no longer have to eat when he is not hungry?simply because his sugar is low; and he would be able to indulge to his heart?s content in as much watermelon as he would like?without having to worry about measuring the portion size and calculating the estimated carbohydrates!  And?mom and dad could sleep peacefully through the night, not wondering if this is the night that his hormones will take a turn and his body will go into hypoglycemia in the middle of the night!  Oh my gosh, such a wonderful dream!  We are close, so very close.  Your support, emotional and financial, is making this day closer and closer to our reality!  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

The Family (new and old) - At the walk last year, type 1 heroes wore tie-dyed shirts.  After the walk into the amusement park, participants celebrated the day enjoying Holiday World and Splash?n Safari (thank you Holiday World?this truly does make it a day of celebration and fun!).  What a transformational day for our family!  For the first time since Ryland?s diagnosis, we could easily point to other boys and girls that too had type 1 diabetes.  Our whole family came from near and far to celebrate Ryland and all of our new family members whose lives had been changed by the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.  The entire day, as we enjoyed the amusement part, we continued to point out to Ryland other boys and girls ?just like him?.  That was a first for Ryland?and a first for us.  It was the first time since his diagnosis that we felt ?normal?.

Our Team, Stack the Countries ? Well, Ryland has progressed this year.  He started off last year addicted to Dan Russell-Pinson?s iPhone app Stack the States.  He quickly transferred that addiction to Dan?s Stack the Countries game.  So this year, in keeping with the theme of our team name being the name of Ryland?s favorite iPhone app, we are thrilled that Dan has agreed to sponsor our Walk to Cure Diabetes campaign again as team Stack the Countries. Dan does an amazing job of combing learning and fun.  His award winning apps are truly top notch.  Please check them out:  Stack the States, Stack the Countries, Rocket Math, and Presidents vs Aliens.  Thank you Dan.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us in what the Walk to Cure Diabetes means to our family.
