I'm participating in Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes!

Welcome to my fundraising page for the 32nd Annual Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes.

My name is TJ Kenny and I am living with Type 1 Diabetes. I was diagnosed in July of 2012. I spent the week at Gonzaga Basketball camp in Spokane. One of the friends on my team has Type 1 Diabetes. He mentioned that my frequent trips to the restroom and to the drinking fountain could be a sign that I have Type 1 Diabetes.

When I returned to Seattle, we went to the doctor for a urine test to test my glucose level. I had very high glucose level and was immediately admitted to Children's Hospital. For the next 4 days, my family and I learned to manage and live a full life with Type 1 Diabetes.

I prick my finger 8-10 times a day to get a glucose reading. I usually take insulin shots 3-4 times per day to help my body convert sugars and carbs into energy I can use. I count my carbohydrate intake at every meal and calculate how much insulin I may need or not need. It's a constant challenge. But it keeps me eating right, staying in shape and living an active life.

All in all, life is good. I still love playing basketball and football and my Type 1 is not holding me back. My friends and family have been really supportive. The one positive thing about living with Type 1 is I have met some really great people.

This is my second year living with Type 1 Diabetes and my second of many Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes runs. In my first year of participating, I was overwhelmed by the donations of friends, family and some people I hardly know. The event itself is really amazing.  10,000 people gathering together to run and to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Please consider joining our team, the MighT1s. And, yes, I did Beat the Bridge last year!

I write to my friends and family to ask for your support in finding a cure for the millions of Americans living with Type 1 Diabetes. You can donate through this page, join our fundraising team or just join us on the run. It's a great event for great cause.

If you would like to join us on the run hit the Join button and register for the Race.  At that point, you may be able to ask friends and relatives to donate under your name.  If you would like to donate, hit the link for my name and then hit the donate button.

I wish you all the best and I hope to see you out there!
