I have been inspired by a very special young lady, my partner's daughter, Olivia. Olivia, who is now 16 years old, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 13. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a serious disease that affects her life every day, and I will tell you more about that in a moment. While many people believe that insulin is a cure for diabetes, it is only a way to manage the disease and try to prevent its life-threatening complications. That's why I am committed to JDRF - the only global organization with a strategic plan to fight T1D.
JDRF raises funds for research that will progressively remove the daily burden, side effects, and complications of T1D. I am participating in the 32nd Annual Nordstrom Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes to raise as much money as I can for the research that will help Olivia and others with this disease continue to live a healthier and safer life while scientists search for a cure.
From the time Olivia was diagnosed, she has not let this disease define her. Olivia's pancreas do not produce insulin and she has to prick her finger sometimes up to 10 times a day to test her blood sugar, and then manage her insulin, as well as pay careful attention to her diet, sleep and exercise. For a teen that is the captain of the cheer team and a soccer star, the highs and lows of her blood sugar, keeping that number balanced has been a huge challenge. She has been an inspiration to many in our close circle of family and friends, and I wanted to share how proud we all are of her.
This year, I will be joining many others in our community on May 18, 2014. I have chosen a fundraising goal of 1600 dollars because Olivia is 16 years old, and I am hoping that each year, that dollar amount grows as Olivia grows, until the cure found. You can make a real difference in Olivia's life and the lives of all people with T1D by becoming a fundraiser or by making a donation. It only takes a few minutes!
