Welcome to our team page for the 32nd Annual Nordstrom Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes!

We're in our third year helping JDRF create a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D) where no one has to fear developing this serious autoimmune disease. By joining our Nordstrom Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes team and making a donation to JDRF, you can be part of the effort to improve the lives of millions of people affected by T1D.  One of those millions of people is my son Isaac, who was diagnosed in late 2011.

In T1D, a person's pancreas stops producing useful insulin, which is essential to the body’s ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet or lifestyle. Managing T1D requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing throughout the day (and in the middle of the night), and a lifelong dependence on insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure. Recent technological advances funded by JDRF, however, have helped those with T1D better manage their blood-glucose.  For example, Isaac carries with him and uses an insulin pump, to better manage delivery of insulin during meals and throughout the day.  He is about to begin using a continuous glucose monitor, which will allow him to maintain tighter control of blood-glucose throughout the day with less testing (pokes).  It includes alarms which trip if the blood-glucose goes too low or too high, which should allow him and us to sleep through the night for the first time in two and a half years!  Until there is a cure, advances like these bring us ever closer to an artificial pancreas.  But more funding is needed to make that happen.

JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every donation, big or small, from donors like you, allows JDRF to fund the critical research needed to techniques for better management of T1D and ultimately find a cure.  Will you accept the challenge to make a difference in your community by joining us? Just click “Join This Team” to become a team member and start fundraising. Or click “Donate to This Team” to make a donation.

Thank you for your support!
