We will turn Type One into Type None

Welcome to Courtney's Clan JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page!

We formed our Walk Team, Courtney's Clan, to raise money to support the research required to cure, better treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D). T1D is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin – a hormone essential to turning food into energy. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure – yet.

Hi, I’m Courtney!  If you don’t know, I have type I diabetes (T1D).  You may be more familiar with the term juvenile diabetes.

On October 28th, 2011, after my Halloween party at school, I went to see my doctor.  My mom made an appointment because I was using the bathroom a lot, eating a lot, drinking a lot and I lost 6 pounds in only 2 weeks.  The doctor decided to test my blood sugar and the meter simply read “HIGH” which on that particular meter meant that my blood sugar was over 550!  The next step was to test for ketones in my urine and when that came back positive, she said I have diabetes and needed to go right to the hospital.

When I got to the hospital, they gave my parents a lot of printed information and told them all about diabetes.  I still didn’t know what any of it really meant and when they came in the room with a needle, I cried really hard.  They told me that I had to poke my finger multiple times a day and get 4 to 5 shots a day.  I was a wreck!  When I finally started to understand what diabetes is, I thought my life was ruined.  It took me awhile to get used to it but now I know I’m going to be ok.  I think of diabetes as a challenge, but a challenge I will conquer!  For example, I have been doing karate for more than 6 and ½ years and am a second degree black belt!  I also play basketball, soccer, golf, piano, and violin.  I perform on a jump rope team sponsored by the American Heart Association and on a karate demo team.

This year I am participating in the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) walk to raise money to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes.  The walk is on Saturday August 2nd in Lansing, MI and I think it would be great to get a lot of people involved!

Thank you,

Together on August 2, 2014, Courtney's Clan is walking to help create a world without T1D. The JDRF Walk is a fantastic way to make a difference in the lives of people affected by T1D.  We are motivated by the courage and perseverance of those facing the everyday challenges of Type 1 Diabetes - they are the reason we challenge ourselves to give more, to do more, to achieve more. Your support of Courtney's Clan can help change that.

Will you accept the challenge to make a difference? By donating or joining our team today, you can help JDRF fund research that impacts the lives of the millions of families challenged by T1D every single day.  No donation is too small and 100% of funds raised goes directly to JDRF. It's simple, fast, and fun!  You can also give any team member your donation directly if you prefer.

With your support, we will turn Type One into Type None. Thank you.
