I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in May 2009 just a couple of months after marrying my beautiful wife, Rachel. Type 1 Diabetes is a serious and currently uncure-able disease that does not get enough attention in today?s media. With complications like permanent loss of eye sight, kidney failure, amputation of limbs, and so on, I cannot understand why.
Diabetes is, may I say first hand, ?roughly? manageable. A person?s pancreas without diabetes makes just enough insulin for whatever someone is eating every time that person puts something in their mouth. It also takes into account how much sleep that person had, exercise, caffeine, and so on. The pancreas is an incredibly complex and intelligent piece of equipment. For a Type 1 Diabetic, the pancreas is doing nothing. Meaning that the body is making no insulin whatsoever. So the Type 1 Diabetic has to inject insulin manually every time he eats accounting for what?s being eaten, when, what you are doing, and the thousand other factors that could help calculate just how much insulin you actually need. Too little insulin and the sugar in his blood would remain high and cause the eye sight loss, kidney failure, limb loss. Too much insulin and the sugar level in his blood would be too low and he could fall into a coma.
These are the things I was faced with and trust me, I had to get really good at math really fast. Carbs, calories, mg/dL, units of insulin, and so on. I am dedicated, 100% to finding a cure. Not just for me, but for all of the other Type 1 and even more Type 2 diabetics in the world. This madness needs to stop. If we can find ways to manage diseases like this, then we can find the cure.
That?s my 2 cents.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
