Christmas of 1996 I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This Christmas, my darling and silly 8 year old nephew, Cole Dickey, was also diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. We share the same story practically: lethargic, running to the bathroom every 2 minutes, insanely high blood sugar, and then the intensive care unit for days. Learning of the diagnosis was an emotional rollercoaster for all of us in the family. I wanted so desperately to fly out to Los Angeles and give the kid a hug, tell him it's all going to be OK. He's such a trooper though, he’s already carb counting and testing his blood sugar through the day. I just wish he didn't have to do those things.
So this year I'm committed to giving more time and more of my efforts to JDRF. I want to show my 8 year old nephew in HIS lifetime a cure. So with the walk at MOA on February 22nd, the Derby for a Cure, and a possible Ride to Cure (ah!) I'm ready to show this disease who's boss.
JDRF and I need your financial support in order to do so.
I am so excited that Cole and his mom are joining Eric and I at the walk this year! I can't wait for Cole to see kids just like him who have Type 1, and all of the excitement that comes with the event and the hope behind finding a cure. Thanks for considering a donation. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will go a long way to help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. If you want to learn more, visit jdrf.org
