Join us in the fight to create a world without Type 1 Diabetes!

On July 16th, 2013, our daughter, Arija, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). T1D is a life-threatening autoimmune disease. Arija's pancreas has stopped producing the insulin she needs to get energy from food.

To keep herself healthy, Arija checks her blood sugar level about 10 times per day by poking her finger. She used to give herself shots of insulin 4 times per day, but now she gets insulin from an insulin pump that is connected to her night and day. She has learned words that no 7-year old should have to know, like bolus, beta cells, blood glucose, and glucagon. And she can tell you exactly how many carbohydrates are in a slice of bread (15) or a bowl of raspberries (5).

In the first weeks after her diagnosis, we, as her parents, felt denial, anger, and fear. On more nights than not, we wake up to check Arija's blood sugar to make sure it is neither too high nor too low. If her blood sugar is too low, she could go into a coma or have seizures. If it's too high, she can go into diabetic ketoacedosis, a life-threatening situation. So we check and check again to keep her safe. In the six months since her diagnosis, we've learned a lot about managing this disease. But as hard as we try, we'll never be a good replacement for Arija's pancreas.

We're joining this year's Walk to Cure Diabetes to raise funds to improve the lives of millions of people with Type 1 Diabetes. The money we raise will help JDRF advance its strategic research plan to end T1D. As the largest non-governmental funder of T1D research, every dollar JDRF directs toward its research plan comes from donors like you.

Please support our commitment and donate to our Walk fundraising efforts today. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease.

We greatly thank you for your support!
