Hi, I’m Lilly Kaye and I have Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) I was diagnosed on Valentine’s Day 2011. I did not know what was happening. I did not know why I felt so sick and tired, or why I was always so thirsty, but now I know all about it. T1D is an autoimmune disorder – my immune system got confused and attacked the cells in my pancreas that create insulin. Accordingly, I will never be able to produce my own insulin and have to inject manufactured insulin in order to survive. I used to take 5 shots a day (almost 2,000 shots a year), but I got pump in 2012 and it’s a lot easier. Sadly I still have to poke my finger 5-7 times a day with a small needle to test my blood sugar. We are trying to raise money for a cure – there are a lot of great things happening thanks to the funds raised by JDRF. Last year I raised $3,000 and I’m hoping to get more this year. Now millions of people have T1D and most first developed it when they were children like me. Even though I have T1D I do everything other kids can do. Two things I love to do is dance and swim but sometimes my Diabetes can get in my way but I don’t let it stop me!
