Dear Family and Friends,

Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!

I want to let each of you know that my family will be taking part in the annual Walk To Cure Diabetes on Saturday, October 4 at Shelby Farms Park.  This will be my sixteenth year to participate.  Currently I am 17 years old but have been living with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) since I was a baby.  I have never known a life without it, but do hope for  a diabetes-free future.

I would like  you to know that Type 1 diabetes is NOT caused by eating too much sugar OR from being overweight OR from lack of exercise. I will NEVER “outgrow” it.  It CANNOT be prevented or reversed and so far there is no cure.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease in which the body's own immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells of the pancreas. In case you don't know, insulin is a necessary hormone that allows the cells in your body to utilize glucose as energy for fuel.  People with T1D can no longer make insulin. The only way to take insulin is by injection or through an insulin pump. Without insulin, death is imminent. I have been wearing an insulin pump for most of my life.  It has become my life support system.  Not only do I live tethered to a machine, but I also have  to count every single carbohydrate gram  I eat (because all carbs become glucose once they are digested)  and I have to stick my fingers to test my blood sugar 6-10 times each day.

There has to be a better, easier, and healthier way for me to live.  The only logical solution is a CURE.  JDRF is the global leader in Type 1 diabetes research. Their mission is simple-to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research.  To accomplish that  I will need your help.  Please consider sponsoring me with a tax deductible donation to JDRF.  The Walk To Cure Diabetes is their biggest fundraising effort of the year.  I know I have asked you for many years to support my walk team.  But, I do STILL have diabetes.  So until they find a cure, we have to keep research moving forward!

I sincerely thank you!
