Join me in the fight to create a world without type 1 diabetes!
Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
On June 7th, 2013, our life changed forever. Our 4 year old daughter, Jamie Lynn, wasn’t feeling well. She was abnormally tired and thirsty. At first my wife Lynn and I thought it might be exhaustion from our recent family vacation to Florida. Since this situation seemed to persist, we decided to take Jamie Lynn to her pediatrician just to be safe. The lab performed blood work and the doctor told us to go home. We went about our usual Friday night routine and were about to put Jamie Lynn to bed when her doctor called. He told us to immediately take her to the emergency room because Jamie Lynn's blood sugar level was 700 and she was in serious danger.
Jamie Lynn was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic. Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
After 6 hours in the ER, her blood sugar dropped significantly and she was admitted into the hospital. We spent the next few days learning the "ins and outs" of a whole new world that was completely upside down from the world we had been living in.
Needless to say, the last year has been a major adjustment period for our family. Jamie Lynn's blood sugar level is tested 5 times a day. Last December, Jamie Lynn decided she was ready for a tubeless insulin pump. An insulin pump is a device that administers insulin to Jamie Lynn. Previous to the pump, we were administering insulin 4 times a day. Everyday has been a new learning experience for us.
The good news is that I'll be taking part in this year's JDRF Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
The money I raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Please support me and donate to my Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible today?
Your donation will count towards the team's fundraising total. In addition, please give credit to the person that asked for your support to recognize them for their efforts in creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D).
