Hello! My name is Cody Gilman and I am 6 years old. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes almost 6 years ago at the age of 13 months. It was a very hard transition with my "new life" as I couldn't talk and tell my mom and dad how I was feeling. I was having seizures and other complications. When I was 2 1/2 years old, I got an insulin pump, which is like an artificial pancreas on the outside of my body. It is nice not having to get shots multiple times a day anymore and my blood sugar has been under better control with no more seizures. I have learned how to test my own blood sugar and enjoy testing my mom and dad and anyone else who will let me practice on them. My little brother even wants to have his blood sugar tested, just to be like me.......his big brother.
In November 2011, my cousin Ethan France was also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I was exited that he was just like me. Ethan on the other hand, wasn't as excited. Ethan and his family were very thankful that becaose of me, he was diagnosed before having any complications.
This year, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million. I will be walking with family and friends as a part of Team Cody & Ethan, with a personal goal of raising $500.
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children who all rely on insulin to survive. Insulin is not a cure, but merely life support!
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible and sign up to join our walk team? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
Your donation will count towards the team's fundraising total. In addition, please give credit to the person that asked for your support to recognize them for their efforts in creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D).
