We will turn Type One into Type None

On September 11, 2013, our youngest son, Jesse (8 years old), was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He had been thirsty, using the bathroom often, and losing weight. We had a family trip to Florida coming up and thought about just waiting until we got back. It's a good thing we didn't.

Jesse's sugar level was 653 and he had DKA (Diabetic KetoAcidosis). You'd never know it by the way he was just carrying on as normal. The ER doctor couldn't believe he was still standing and looking so “normal”. Locally there isn't a Pediatric Endocrinologist, so we headed up to Mayo Clinic right away and stayed there for three days.

Luckily we got home just in time to re-pack and go on our trip to Florida. What a whirlwind couple of weeks, though!

Having a child with diabetes is never an easy thing. We are constantly making adjustments to schedules, meals, snacks, shots, and so on. Jesse has been a trooper through the whole thing. He tests his own sugar, gives his own shots, and eats when and what we say he should – with very few issues. Our hope is that someday a cure can be found.
