You guys, I can't think of anything else I've done eleven times (except, I dunno, birthdays?). Twelve, if you count the year I couldn't ride (thanks, not-yet-born Marin) but worked the finish line in La Crosse.
But this thing--it's important. We're raising dough to fight type 1 diabetes (and, it's working--have you seen what this research is doing?!), and we're strengthening our T1D family along the way.
So, for Katie & Ellie, and (new this year) Zuzu, and all the people I love who never get a break from T1D...I'm not taking a break either. Here, along with my work managing the Holland 100, I hope to raise a cool $5k this year.
Now...the stuff JDRF reminds me to tell you...Did you know T1D:
- Is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin – a hormone essential to turning food into energy.
- Strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle.
- Requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing and lifelong dependence on injected insulin.
With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure – yet. But JDRF is working every day to change that.
