Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page!
Over 26 million Americans live with diabetes and of the children born in 2000, it is estimated that 1 in 3 will develop the disease. Please join Team O to help achieve JDRF's mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Although we have decided to volunteer rather than walk this year, we are still raising money that will go directly to support this life-changing research.
As may of you know, Owen was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on January 6, 2011. A day that changed Owen's life forever. Now every meal or snack is thought in terms of how many carbs am I eating, where was my blood sugar before I ate and how much insulin do I need to take. Owen has adapted to this new life style much better than we ever thought. He has administered his insulin from the very first shot! Of course, we have our moments when life isn't fair, but what 16 year old doesnt have those moments even without diabetes!
One item included in the recent Fiscal Cliff legislation that you may not have been aware of is the renewal of the funding of the Special Diabetes Program (SPD) which was set to expire. This program was developed in 1997 and has enabled scientists to make significant advances in cure therapies, prevention studies and treatment improvements, including the Artificial Pancreas Project However, federal funding alone cannot supoort the research so please help us to raise money to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes and new ways to manage the disease. We are asking for your support. Now more than ever, EACH of us can make a real difference in the lives of people with type 1 diabetes.
