Hello Friends and Family!  Happy New Year and welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page!  

We are proud to say that this is will be our 4th year participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes!!  If you are a returning team member, welcome back and thank you for joining us againg this year!

If you are new to our JDRF family, here's our story.  We walk on behalf of our son, Christopher who, 3 years ago, at the age of 9, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, a sometimes fatal disease. 

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food.  It comes with the threat of devastating complications such as kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputations, heart attack, stroke, and pregnancy complications. This disease requires constant attention; monitoring insulin levels via food, pricking fingers, giving/receiving injections.  It's a tough and daunting task for an adult let alone a child...

Christopher and young people like him suffering from T1D have to grow up very quickly to manage their disease, they are faced with challenges above and beyond that of their already arduous adolescent years.  Being different, when all you want to do is "fit in", or in order to just "hanging out" or "grab a bite" you have to test, count carbs, figure out how much insulin is needed and then give yourself a shot.  Being a kid/teen is hard enough!

Unfortunately, as of yet, there is no cure and that's why we are taking the steps to help achieve JDRF's mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. The money our JDRF Walk Team raises will go directly to support this life-changing research.

This past year, Christopher lost a very special person in his life, his Grandma Colleen Somerson.  So this year we are dedicating this walk to her because we know she is up in Heaven watching over us and cheering us on!
