Isabella's Angels

We are so excited - this is our first year participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes on February 23rd. We are Isabella's Angels and are raising funds to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes, including our daughter Isabella and dear family members Hannah, Shawna, and Joanne.

Isabella is 6 years old and in first grade. She loves sledding, swimming, riding her bike, and playing with friends. She takes ballet and tap dance and is learning how to play soccer. She went to her first all day summer camp this year at Camp Daypoint, a camp for kids with Type 1 Diabetes. It was such a treat to let her just be a kid and not worry. She loved hanging out with her friends and building gnome homes.

Isabella was diagnosed 3 years ago at the age of 3½. We started with insulin injections 6 times a day and testing her blood sugar 7 times a day. Just last year, Isabella started her first insulin pump and she loves it! It has given her more freedom and she loves not getting shots every day. She tests her own blood, and with her parents help counting carbs, gives herself an insulin bolus. We are so proud of her strength and perserverence every day. She does not let diabetes interfere with doing anything that she loves!

Type 1 Diabetes is a life long autoimmune disease for which there is no cure. It is a condition in which the pancreas no longer makes insulin. Without insulin, her body cannot change glucose (sugar) into the energy a person needs to survive. To compensate for the lack of natural insulin, Isabella tests her blood glucose level up to 10 times a day and her insulin pump calculates an insulin bolus to match her total carbohydrate intake for each meal or snack.
