Hi, I'm Julia and I'm asking you to help my team, The Diabetes Dragons, cure type 1 diabetes. I'm 11 years old and I have had type 1 diabetes since I turned 2. I check my blood sugar 9 times a day, I wear an insulin pump, I eat healthy foods, and I exercise. I also do fun things like baking, candy-making, reading, and playing with my friends. People who don't know much about diabetes think I can't eat sugar. People hang over my head when I test myself. Or they think I'm lucky because I 'get' to eat snacks in school when they can't. I usually have a positive attitude about this stuff, but it gets very tiring and I just want to know what it feels like to be a normal kid. A kid who doesn't have to explain herself to everyone all the time.
Mom tells me I was the top fund-raiser for the San Antonio diabetes walk when I was five. I don't really remember that. I don't remember life without diabetes. But I want a future without it.
You can help. JDRF funds research for a cure. Will you join me?
