We are walking with JDRF again this year to raise money for Mia's Motley Crew as we fight to find a CURE for Juvenile (Type 1) Diabetes.
Mia had just turned 6 years old when she seemed to have a bladder infection. A trip to the doctor turned into a stay at Children's Hospital. Mia was diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes.
Through no fault of her own (or anyone else's), her pancreas shut down. She is now a funny, smart, beautiful, active, TEENAGER! Except that she is completely insulin-dependent. Without insulin, she would die. That's why we call insulin life support - not a cure.
Type 1 diabetes is tough, especially for a kid. Mia chooses to wear an insulin pump most of the time. It is attached to her body 24/7 delivering insulin. She has to change the site every three days with a long needle. Her tummy is covered in little scars. She hates having to hide her pump and tubing under her fashionable middle-schooler attire. She has to check her blood and count carbs every time she eats. Her young fingers are all callused.
No matter how vigilant we are with her food and insulin intake, every day is a roller coaster. Mia tends to run high, which can lead to devastating results over time, like nerve damage, blindness, kidney failure and heart problems.
Over Spring Break last year, a combination of illness and not enough insulin landed Mia in the hospital. Not just the hospital, the Pediatric ICU. She went through diabetic ketoacidosis. There was a point where she refused to wake up for me and was unresponsive. Her heart raced for days. They were about to send her to check her brain activity, when finally she began responding. Lying in the hospital bed with her, praying for her heart rate to calm, I have never felt so helpless, scared and sick in all my life. NO CHILD , NO PARENT should have to deal with this.
Mia rebounded as Mia tends to do, and by the following weekend was on the softball field. She's an amazing kid.
Right now there IS NO CURE for Type 1 Diabetes, and that is why we walk with JDRF every year to raise money to go to fund research. We need breakthrough cures/treatments for type 1 diabetes and its complications.
In the meantime, we take it one day at a time and laugh about it when we can.
Please walk with us, or donate and forward this message to encourage your friends to do so also. Love y'all.
