For years, Channel 2 WSB-TV has sponsored the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, which raises funds for scientific research to better treat, prevent and ultimately cure Type 1 Diabetes. We have never had a team join the cause. That changes this year.
Type 1 Diabetes is different from the diabetes you hear about in relation to the obesity crisis. TYPE 1 DIABETES HAS NO KNOWN CAUSE AND THERE IS NO CURE. Approximately 3 million adults and children in the U.S. are living with T1D, with about 80 new cases diagnosed every day!
Former Channel 2 Action News anchor John Pruitt and his wife Andrea helped start the Georgia JDRF chapter when their daughter Kristina was diagnosed as a child. Since John's retirement, they are more active in the cause than ever. I joined them 3 years ago when my then 22-month-old neice Brynn was diagnosed. Both Kristina and Brynn deserve a life without constant finger pricks to check their blood sugar, without constant carbohydrate counting, without experiencing dangerously high and low blood sugar readings and without the fear of potentially devastating and sometime deadly complications this disease causes.
When I told John we wanted to get a CMG team together he seemed both touched and energized.
The walk is October 19th at Centennial Olympic Park. It begins at 9:00, well before any football games (UGA is AT Vandy that day). The park also is filled with games and entertainment for the whole family. Everyone - including your family, friends and your family's friends - are welcome to join our team. And if you can't join us, please consider sponsoring us.
