Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
On January 28, 2011, when she was just 8 years old, Katie Lynn was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. We were shocked, panicked, terrified. Life officially changed forever.
At the time, I remember the doctor looking at our youngest child, then only 2 months old, and saying this would be like having two newborns. He was not far off, but the baby's care was easier.
Learning to care for a diabetic child is consuming. Nothing must go unnoticed - together we monitor what she eats, how much exercise she gets, how much insulin she needs, how long she's been sleeping, whether her sugar is too high or too low, and countless other factors. She frequently has to stop her activities to monitor and treat herself.
Far beyond juggling all the carb counting, finger pricks, shots, and doctors' appointments, the hardest thing has been seeing Katie accept this disease as a constant, never-ending part of her life. We all watch our children struggle, but seeing them toil with a life-threatening disease is heartwrenching.
We are walking because we believe in having hope: hope for a cure, hope for better health, hope for a day when Katie can return to planning her life without the constant shadow of diabetes. We support JDRF because they invest 80% of all donations straight to research and development for a cure.
"I am walking for JDRF because I want to find a cure. The JDRF administration is getting money to find a cure or even create an artificial pancreas. I want other people to walk and donate because we can support the reseach and find a cure sooner."
