This year marks 17 years since Chris was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. That means 17 years of needles, finger sticks, doctor appointments, high and low blood sugars, sleepless nights, and waiting for a cure.
However, something has changed for us this year. We have welcomed a beautiful, precious daughter into our family, Makenzie. There are truly no words to express the joy and pride we have experienced over the last two months. She is the absolute light of our life. Of course every parent knows the crazy “over the moon” kind of love that accompanies having a new little bundle of joy. But let’s be honest, we can also attest to the challenges and hurdles that are placed in front of us: sleepless nights, new parent worries, and countless uncertainties. But what if you had to add, “Will my daughter have a lifelong disease?” We do.
The harsh reality is that our beautiful baby girl is at an increased risk of developing Type 1 Diabetes in her lifetime. Not only is this a concern for us but so is the fact that her Daddy has to deal with this illness every day. Chris is an amazing husband and even better father. I couldn’t ask for a more loving and patient man to raise a family and spend my life with. No one deserves to have to worry about if their blood sugar will be stable enough to go to bed or pick up their child and help when they are crying. But Chris does.
So what’s the answer? I wish I knew. What I do know is that it takes time, resources, and awareness if we plan on finding a cure anytime soon. That’s where you come into play. Of course donations are always welcome (year round actually) and deeply appreciated. The monetary gifts fund research. What I am asking from you is to spread the word. Use your social media connections to make a difference. Do it for every person with Type 1 Diabetes, do it for Chris, do it for Makenzie. Share this letter or make your own. The goal is to let the world know we are fighting and searching for an end to this disease. Be a part of that.
With all of my love,
