Hi! Greetings from Elise, the minion's team captain. In October I'm doing a JDRF walk. We formed a team called Elise's Minions. Each walking team gathers donations to go to the JDRF fund to help cure diabetes.
Juvenile diabetes is also known as type 1 diabetes. Ulike type 2 diabetes you can't go to the park and jog it off. You can't outgrow it, and there is no known cure. Type 1 diabetes means that an organ called your pancreas stops making a hormone called insulin. Insulin controls your blood sugar. Without insulin your blood sugar flies to outrageous numbers.
When I was diagnosed my blood sugar was over 500. Ideally your blood sugar should be 60-160. In more severe cases some peoples blood sugar can be over 1000. At every meal I have to know exactly how many carbohydrates (sugars) I'm eating. I have very limited snack privilages ( te he he ); I can only have 15 carbs of food. A banana has 30 carbohydrates. Then I prick my finger and get a small drop of blood to feed to my meter so it can tell me my blood sugar. Then I have to take and insulin injection (a fancy word for shot) based on how many carbs I'm eating and what my blood sugar is. I have to do this at every meal, snack over 15 carbs, and at bedtime. I always have to have some form of quick acting sugar with my in case my blood sugar gets too low.
Well this ends the doom and gloom portion of my letter! Let's put a smile back on our faces now!
Thank you for donation! The Minions will defeat type 1 diabetes!
