Welcome to Team Oliver's JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
Type 1 Diabetes – also known as one of the many obstacles in my life. I was 13 when I found out about this disease. It was August 2, 2012.
It was the summer of 2012 when I found out about my chronic disease. I noticed how I was constantly drinking. My friend and I timed myself to see how fast I could chug a large Gatorade. 45 seconds. It took me a consecutive 45 seconds to drink that. I was even nicknamed Camel at one of my summer church camps that summer. Also, I lost 15 pounds in a short period of time. Of course, being the self conscious 13 year old girl, at first I was happy to lose a few pounds but it happened very suddenly so I was also worried. My mom was very worried. I mean what parent wouldn’t be concerned at a sudden weight loss. My dad, who works for Monsanto, was halfway around the WORLD when we discovered I had diabetes. One of my biggest worries about going to the doctor was getting my finger pricked. At the doctor’s office they checked my blood sugar and I was over 500. When I realized I had to immediately go to the Emergency Room I was so mad because I was going to have to cancel my good friend’s surprise birthday party.
I spent three days and two nights in the hospital. When I arrived my blood sugar was 653. I was very lucky that we went to the doctor that day. I learned about carbohydrates, keytones, the “lows” and “highs” of life with diabetes. I am a Freshman cheerleader and very active but often times I have to stop what I am doing to check my blood sugar to make sure I am ok.
Throughout this year of diabetes I have learned to accept it. I can’t let this disease define or destroy me. I have to let it somehow strengthen me. Even though Type 1 Diabetes has no cure, I am praying everyday for one. Thanks to JDRF for all the progress they make daily thanks to your support and donations.
