Hello Friends and Family!!
Just over a year ago, our daughter Gabby was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This is something that never goes away and affects every aspect of her life. Because her pancreas no longer produces the insulin required for her body to use glucose (sugar) properly, she is dependent on insulin injections. She also needs to check her blood sugar several times a day by pricking her fingers.
Type 1 Diabetes is not just a disease. Having T1D means Gabby has had to make many adjustments to her everyday life. Even something as simple as deciding what to eat and when is now a challenge. There is always the concern that her blood sugar level may fall too low or rise too high. She must take her testing supplies with her every where she goes.
When she was first diagnosed, Gabby spent several days in the hospital with blood sugar levels that were dangerously high. As you can imagine, this was a frightening experience. We never want her to have to go through that again. As her parents, we have spent a lot of time learning about T1D and how to help her manage it effectively.
Gabby has been amazing throughout this entire experience. She doesn't complain about having to prick her fingers to check her blood sugar before every meal. She doesn't complain about not being able to eat whatever she wants whenever she wants. She even says "Thank You" after receiving her injections! But we know this hasn't been easy for her. It's a lot to wrap your head around, especially for a 13 year old.
There is so much to learn about T1D, there's just no way to put it all here. What's important to know for now, is that there is no cure. While T1D can be managed with insulin, diet, and exercise, it will never go away.
We think we can change that. We believe that through research and development of new treatments, a cure can be found. That is why we have decided to participate in the fundraising efforts of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
We are asking for your support. Please donate to our personal fundraising efforts. By doing so, you can help us make a difference for millions of people living with Type 1 Diabetes. We also encourage those who can to come out and walk with us on August 3rd...it's a great day of fun, exercise, and support for our loved ones.
As the leader of the Type 1 Diabetes community, JDRF unifies global efforts to cure, treat and prevent T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Every dollar counts and they can add up to a cure!!
Thank you for your support and God Bless!
