Erik was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just weeks before his third birthday. Unless a cure is found, Erik and millions of others will be insulin-dependent for the rest of their lives. In just one year, Erik receives roughly 3,600 fingerpricks and 150 site changes, plus insulin shots when needed. Everything he eats must be weighed or measured so we can count carbohydrates. His blood sugar even needs to be checked while he sleeps. Diabetes never takes a vacation and will not go away when he grows up. Insulin is not a cure. It is a 24/7 battle we wage with his blood sugar to keep it under control.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system stops making insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. It is not caused by eating too much candy and has nothing to do with childhood obesity. If neglected, it can lead to blindness, kidney failure, neuropathy, poor circulation and even limb amputation.
Despite being aware of his condition, Erik is full of energy and determination amidst his daily diabetes routine. He can check his own blood sugar, count carbs, pump his own insulin and even give himself shots. Erik continually amazes us with his positive attitude. He is our hero. He is the reason why we will be walking for JDRF.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is holding its annual Walk to Cure Diabetes on Saturday September 14th in Milwaukee at the Zoo. Once again, Erik's CARBage Collectors are raising money towards this cause.
This year, we will also walk on behalf of Pat Haran, who participated in our previous walks and took the time to learn about how to care for her grandson with Type 1. Even though her arthritis kept her from walking, she supported our team and came out with us each year. Please join us by walking with us or making a donation in honor of Pat Haran.
Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by walking with us? Just click on the "Join this Team" button, make a donation, and start fundraising.
Thank you for your support, and we'll see you on Walk day!
