Welcome to the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Maynard Page! We are taking the steps to help achieve JDRF’s mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
Hi. It’s me, Jennifer Maynard. My mom has been writing about our quest for a cure for diabetes since 2001 when I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 10. For the past 12 years I have been living with Type 1 Diabetes. Can I just say, very candidly, that it sucks! I am so tired of always checking my blood sugars, of the highs and lows and the impact on my mood and energy level, and, not to mention, what a pain in the #$$%# (finger!) it is to be poking myself all the time. I so want to be done with this!
If there’s one thing positive that came out of this diagnosis for me, it was my choice of career. I am now Nurse Jen, BSN. When I was in the hospital at age 10 learning all about the disease that I would now have to live with for the rest of my life and learning the proper “stick” techniques, I had some very wonderful and caring nurses and I decided right then and there, that that‘s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life; help those who were in poor health or had a disease and needed some compassion and understanding.
Being a nurse and taking care of others really requires me to be diligent about my health and management of my diabetes. I know diabetes isn’t the worse disease in the world, but it sure would be nice if I didn’t have to be worrying about my blood sugar level while caring for someone who may be acutely ill. Wouldn’t you agree? The only real solution here is to find a cure; not only so that I can provide even more focus on my patients, but so that others, especially children, don’t have to go through the daily finger pokes. It’s annoying and painful!
In order to find a cure, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Team Maynard are asking for your support in the 2013 Walk for the Cure. The goal this year is for the team to raise $4,000 and have 25 walkers in Tempe on November 2nd supporting Team Maynard.
Two ways you can help us make a difference for everyone living with diabetes:
Unfortunately, I am unable to join the team again this year as I will be working that day out of state. However, I will be there in spirit and I’m sure my mom will have “cardboard Jen” in attendance. We are so grateful to everyone who has participated in the past with our team and walked the walk or sponsored Team Maynard. Thank you!
